MOUNTAIN MOROTO

Mount Moroto, situated in the Karamoja region of Northern Uganda, stands as the highest peak in the area. It is strategically located adjacent to the town of Moroto in Moroto District, approximately 3 kilometers east by road. The mountain shares a border with Kenya’s Turkana region to the east. Interestingly, the native name “Moru-To” translates to “the western mountain,” a nod to the historical westward migration of the local population. This name reflects the significant role the mountain has played in the region’s cultural and geographical heritage.

Mount Moroto is part of a volcanic chain along the Kenyan border, stretching from Mount Elgon in the south to Mountain Kadam and Mountain Morungole. The region surrounding Mount Moroto is a protected forest reserve, harboring a diverse range of habitats, including arid thorn savannas and dry montane forests. This unique ecosystem supports a variety of wildlife, albeit in modest numbers, such as bushbabies, monkeys, the elusive golden cat, and over 220 bird species. While reaching the higher elevations requires a challenging hike, the town at the foot of the mountain offers easy access to stunning arid thorn savannas and rocky slopes, making it an ideal base for exploration. The mountain’s diverse landscapes and habitats make it a fascinating destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Mount Moroto, a majestic twin-peaked mountain, rises dramatically to an elevation of 3,082 meters above the vast plains of Karamoja, the traditional homeland of the Karamojong people. The mountain’s highest peak, often overlooked, is actually “Sokodek”, while the more famous and frequently climbed peak is “Imagit”. The Imagit peak offers a thrilling hiking experience, with the ascent and descent achievable within a day, making it an attractive option for adventure seekers. Recognizing the potential of this precious resource, the World Food Program has initiated a project to empower the Karamojong people with skills to harvest, store, and utilize this water for irrigation. This innovative approach aims to enhance agricultural productivity, enabling households to grow their own food and generate income through the sale of surplus produce. By harnessing the mountain’s natural water resources, the program seeks to improve food security, promote sustainable livelihoods, and transform the lives of the Karamojong community.

HOW TO GET THERE

Mountain Moroto is accessible from Mbale via two routes:

1. Via Soroti: This route takes approximately 6 hours, covering a distance of 170 kilometers.
2. Via the direct eastern route: This route takes around 7 hours, covering a distance of 230 kilometers.

Both routes offer scenic views and a glimpse into the local landscape. However, the direct eastern route may take a bit longer due to the rugged terrain.
