During my course of duty as a tour guide; which spans a period of 11years now, I have been asked this question quit a number of times. I don’t know where they people get this information but may be from friends or from what they read on internet
The truth of the matter is that people say or write their own personal experiences which at most are one or two days experiences and they forget that gorilla experiences change every day for every particular gorilla family.
My experience as a tour guide is that I have had both extreme situations in both countries. I have sometimes had it tough/long in Uganda and I have also sometimes had it tough/long in Rwanda. I have also sometimes had it easy in Uganda and I have also sometimes had it easy in Rwanda. It therefore depends on the luck of the day for either countries, remember that these are wild animals which wonder around the forest looking for food and depending on where they are feeding from,it can be near or far it can be difficult or easy, so always be prepared for both. However its advisable to be generally physically fit,at least, have ability to walk for at least four hours in the mountainous jungle. Being prepared for the worst case scenario(probably 8hrs) is the best option, because in some instances it has happened
There are always at rescue options in case someone failed to walk while in the jungle,or for those people with physical disabilities who can not manage to hike. The “helicopter” rescue team (potters with a stretcher) is always on standby to carry only one who fails to walk or those with physical disabilities to or from the gorillas but at a fee of 300$ per person. ( this price is subject to change)
My experience with gorilla tracking groups is that, some people love it long, others prefer medium while others love it short or easy. Those who love long hikes but find them near always go disappointed the Same to those who would love it short but end taking long
In conclusion come prepared for anything well knowing that these are wild animals with a big home range that are always moving looking for the food
