IntheheartofKampalaCity,withinRubagadivision,liestheKabaka’sLake,(king’slake)avastreservoirspanningover2squarekilometersandreachingdepthsofapproximately200feet.Thisimpressivewaterbodywasconstructedin1880undertheordersofKingMwangaII,thereigningkingofBugandaatthetime.Inaremarkabledisplayofcommunaleffort,the52tribesofBugandacametogethertodigthelake,withbothmenandwomenworkingsidebysidetofulfilltheirKig’swishes.However,noteveryonewaseagertoobeytheking’scommand.Theparishchiefs,princes,andprincessesinitiallyrefusedtoparticipate,promptingthekingtotakedrasticaction.KingMwangaIIjoinedhispeopleinthediggingprocess,leadingbyexampleandshamingtheroyalsintocompliance.Thisboldmoveultimatelycompelledthereluctantroyalstojointheeffort,ensuringthesuccessfulcompletionofthelake’sconstruction.
